Report: Bleeding Darkness Part One.
Part One: "Hear Me"
Agents receive their summons from Iago, it's been hardly a month since their raid at Cornucopia House in Maryland, they aren't expecting to be summoned for a field operation so soon. The summons comes in the form of a text-to-speech robotic voice that demands a password from a book code from a variety of books, a collection of poetry from the Chinese Revolution, Paradise Lost, the Encyclopedia Brtiannica, etc. They travel to Queens, New York to receive their briefing at a Delta Green safehouse near John F. Kennedy International Airport.
10:00 AM, 10 March, 1999.
They are received by Iago, who introduces them to Nancy of N-Cell, who handles the briefing.
FBI Consultant Jean Qualls, Agent Nancy |
They're briefed on Dr. Mariette Monpierre, a Friendly of Delta Green employed at the Chief Medical Examiner's Office of New York City, and explains that she made a covert report to Delta Green by way of Nancy, her contact in the group, of a supernatural incident that she had witnessed while attempting to conduct the autopsy of Father Casimir Szary. It is as follows:
Nancy takes a few questions to clarify the details of the initial report before the cell splits up to begin getting a lay of the situation. The agents are eager to arrange for a meeting face-to-face with Monpierre to go over the details with her, and to see if anything new has come to light in the day since her initial report. Nancy explains that as Dr. Monpierre is potentially under the surveillance of an opposing force, she and the doctor have been communicating secretly and in such a way that tails / surveillance is easily detectable. Nancy contacts Dr.Monpierrefor a meeting at noon at a prearranged meeting location. Indigo decides to try her hand at counter-surveillance to see if they can detect and identify anyone spying on Dr. Monpierre, meanwhile Irena and Isaac visit our Lady of częstochowa - St. Casimir Parish, the church that Szary ministered for, to have a look around, and Imogen made a phone call to Lydia Friel, a prosecutor she had encountered in a prior operation during a failed attempt to charge Vasili Karpov aka Fedor Berezhkov of collaborating with elements of the Russian mafia

Indigo spots little of interest beyond a drug deal in an alley near Dr. Monpierre's brownstone. Irena and Isaac visit our Lady of częstochowa and see a vigil that had been erected on the sidewalk before the cathedral in memoriam of Father Casimir.
They enter the church and see clergymen attending to their duties and two catholic priests sat in the pews silently contemplating the church. They talk to a Deacon, some other church goers, and finally the two priests, who identify themselves as Father Gus and Father Kenneth about Casimir, learning that he was held universally in high regard for his dedication to the faith and his community outreach, especially in his ministering to the sick at the terminal ward at Kings County Medical Centre. On their way out, two cards near prayer candles dedicated to the Father catch their eye:
"God will welcome him in heaven, a warrior for truth and peace on earth, champion for the sick."
-Dr. Rafiq
"I'm sorry, this isn't over, your efforts weren't in vain"
-G.G
They take note of them before leaving. Imogen speaks with Lydia Friel, wishing to go through the prosecutor to make inquiries about Detective James Olaerrva discretely. Friel asks if this is involved with Karpov, to which Imogen neither confirms nor denies (though subtly implies it to be case), Friel promises to see what she can dig up through connections in the police union. I-Cell regroups to attend the meeting with Dr. Monpierre before comparing notes. Their interview with Monpierre reveals more details about the supernatural state of Father Szary's physical remains.
- When they reanimated in the early morning hours on the 9th, they remained "animate" for about two hours before returning to "lifelessness", though all he did was turn his neck from side to side, move his jaw, flex his toes. Beyond "hear me", he said nothing. She doesn't think he moved or spoke when the detectives were in the room, but isn't sure.
- They reanimated again in the early morning hours of the 10th, around midnight, and remained animate for about four hours, though she didn't observe him directly and kept him locked in the office's mortuary refrigerator. She reports that she could hear him whispering to himself. He seemed anxious and confused, and would occasionally repeat variations of "The Blackness, Gowdie, the Girl, the Blackness, the Girl".
- She will be working tonight and will allow the agents to inspect the remains. She has not performed a proper autopsy of the corpse out of fear, though is willing to with the agents there as protection.
- From what she saw of his chest wound on the first night, superficially it appeared that Fr. Szary had been impaled.
She didn't report any signs of having been followed or watched, and thanks the agents for coming to straighten things out. They let her go. After the meeting and comparing notes, Nancy decides to lean on N-Cell's contacts in the CDC for sampling kits, as she thinks taking tissue samples of Father Szary for A-Cell to analyze will be prudent. Indigo volunteers to tail Dr. Monpierre home to assure she isn't being followed, meanwhile Imogen goes to see about swiping "G.G's" card from the cathedral, Irena and Isaac go to Kings County Medical Centre, hypothesizing that the Dr. Rafiq who penned the card at the cathedral might be employed there.
Imogen's attempt to discretely take G.G's card is interrupted by a young girl who converses with her, introducing herself as "Gabrielle". Through their conversation, Imogen deduces that the girl must have become acquainted with Father Casimir through his community outreach; her informed and impassioned position on the LGBT community and the matter of the treatment of AIDS patients at Kings County, and Father Szary's compassion for them and their families and friends, makes Imogen wonder if Gabrielle is perhaps a member of the LGBT community.
Meanwhile, Irena and Isaac locate and talk to Dr. Rafiq, questioning him about his relationship to Father Casimir. Dr. Rafiq reveals that he became acquainted first with Father Casimir Szary when he immigrated to the United States from Syria and, as a Syrian Catholic, attended sunday service at our Lady of częstochowa - St. Casimir Parish as it was nearest to his apartment at the time. He reveals that he had gone to Fr. Szary in a moment of darkness to confess and seek guidance, as he had begun to despair at the lack of meaningful progress in identifying and developing a treatment for a mysterious illness that had been affecting patients in the terminal ward at Kings County Medical Centre. Evidently, his account stirred Fr. Szary, how became immediately inquisitive and expressed a willingness to help Dr. Rafiq anyway that he could, which, by Rafiq's accounting, consisted primarily of doing interviews with the sick and their families. Rafiq found it odd, but wondered if this was Fr. Szary helping in the only way he could, as a man without any medical training. The interviews were normally about the contents of their dreams, which struck Rafiq as odd at first, though he thought little of it. It's through these interviews, according to Rafiq, he encountered a young gay rights activist that became a confidant and partner in his efforts by the name of Gabrielle Gleeson. Irena and Isaac posit the question to Dr. Rafiq if he believes the illness is being introduced to them by a member of the hospital staff, which disturbs Rafiq, though he claims that it does not appear to be the case. They conclude their interview and call Imogen to share what they've learned.

Meanwhile, Indigo tails Dr. Monpierre. The tail goes on for a while, as Dr. Monpierre follows a circuitous route back to her home. Along the way, Indigo spots a disheveled homeless fellow who begins to tail Dr. Monpierre, who stops to make notes in a ledger book outside of Dr. Monpierre's address. Indigo learns that he man is counting the paces it takes for him to walk city blocks, and brief notes of the people he runs into. She also notices a black briefcase with him that she steals, though she is surprised by its heft and awful smell. She contacts Irena and Isaac for pickup, throwing the briefcase into the back of a cab and heading back to a secondary location for it to be inspected.
