OPERATION SILVER SYNOD

TO: ALPHONSE. FROM: I-CELL, V-CELL

ENTRY TWO

// BEGIN MESSAGE //

JULY 22, 2001.

On an airstrip outside of Santiago, SYNOD-2 (Victor, Waxer, and Irena) disembark from their aircraft. Standing across the gravel strip from them near a van is their contacts in Chile. The newly-minted Delta Green agents VERA and VERMUNDO. They review the supplementary information provided by SYNOD-1 on their way to VERMUNDO's villa outside the capitol. What they knew was that according to information gathered during Operation SPECTRUM in Macau. The Exalted Circle and Karotechia would be working together on an operation together they codenamed “WRECKING BALL”. The Karotechia were providing some of the “magic” they needed for WRECKING BALL, as well as some of the arms and training. SYNOD-1 identified a few locations of interest, namely the Colonia Dignidad (a “Lutheran Mission” in rural Chile formerly run by an ex-Nazi, and which was used by the DINA as a torture centre for communists during the Pinochet years), and Wickham Island, an island in Tierra del Fuego where Karlo Eichenwald, a suspected Exalted Circle member, had a private getaway.

To help in their efforts against the Karotechia, Delta Green's allies in SV-8 are lending their help. They were given the identities of several GRU spies in Chile and the protocols to activate them, and while they prepared their cloak-and-dagger games in Chile, SYNOD-1 would be hard at work coordinating with SV-8's allies, a broad cast of mercenaries, arms dealers, spies, for support.

For several weeks, SYNOD-2 worked these leads and more, to paint a broader, more detailed picture of the Nazi-coloured rot that had taken root in Chile.

The Colonel

The first person SYNOD-2 approached was Colonel Edmundo O'Dowd of the Carabineros de Chile. Fortuitously, it had been O'Dowd who had leveraged the police raids against the Colonia Dignidad in the past. Fruitless as those raids were in finding any evidence of the rumoured caches of illicit weapons or of Schafer's pedophilic abuses, it did mean that in O'Dowd they had an ally against the Nazi scourge. Conversation with the Colonel confirmed as much, and he pledged that he would make arrangements to coordinate a police assault on Colonia with the agents' help if it finally meant bringing the bastards to justice. There was, however, one problem. O'Dowd was quite certain that the reason his previous attempts at a bust on the Colonia failed was because of a leak. Someone inside the Carabineros was leaking information to the Colonia. Until the mole was sought out and eliminated, the Carabineros weren't terribly useful. Nonetheless, SYNOD-2 kept his promises in mind going forward.

The Politician

The second person on the GRU's list was Gustavo Zoido, a politician with the Izquierda Cristiana. GRU intelligence indicated that Zoido had a connection to the MIR leftist guerillas through a family member. Once again, SYNOD-2 made their approach. Zoido was initially hesitant to put them in touch with the MIR until VERMUNDO told him what they'd be offering in exchange. Through his close associate Vladimiro Montesinos, VERMUNDO had managed to procure a covert shipment of Russian AK-47s initially bound for Peru. Should the MIR accept their offer, those AK-47s were all theirs. Not only that, but they would even detach VERA, an expert covert operator, to train the MIR. Zoido seemed impressed by the offer, and assured the agents he would "pass the good news along" as soon as he could.

The Spy

The third person SV-8 gave Delta Green was going to be receiving a much harsher treatment than the others. Bautista Fraga was a former analyst and interrogator for the DINA, now employed as a clerk for its successor organization, the CNI. Based on intelligence gathered by SYNOD-1, Delta Green had good reason to suspect that the Karotechia had recruited a number of former DINA agents to continue their duties as the Fourth Reich’s counterintelligence agents locally. For their names, they came to Fraga. Fraga was awoken rudely to a cadre of masked men clad in black dragging him out of bed and leading him to his bathroom. With a pistol pressed against his head, he was demanded to provide a list of DINA agents still affiliated with the Colonia Dignidad. He didn’t know any of their names off the top of his head, but mentioned that many of them drink together. They hold a meeting at a bar in Concepcion called the Falcon’s Roost. The club was popular among the DINA back in the old days, and it still is among Chilean fascist circles. After some back-and-forth (and a healthy helping of threats on Fraga’s life), he promised to provide the agents with a list of names.

SYNOD-2 reasoned that if there was a mole in the Carabineros, they’d likely be reporting to one of the Ex-DINA thugs so they could pass it along. They reasoned that going through the Ex-DINA would lead them to the mole, and that once the mole was eliminated, they’d be free to orchestrate their raid on the Colonia.

The Concepcion Affair

Not long after, Fraga came out with the goods. Names and addresses of ex-DINA scumbags living across Chile, most of them in Santiago and Concepcion. They also learned that there was going to be a meeting at the Falcon’s Roost to discuss security measures for their “friend’s guests”, and that some “friends from out of town” were going to be present. They decided that the meeting would be the perfect distraction to case some of their apartments, and so once the meeting had started, SYNOD-2 split into two teams and infiltrated the homes of the most senior DINA agents on their list. Thiago Pratt & Saul Tafalla.

The home of Pratt turned up some prizes. About a quarter of a million dollars in drug money stuffed into the dry wall and a few pistols that could have use later as drop pieces. The home of Tafalla was another story.

Tafalla was the most senior DINA agent, and the one, according to Fraga, who had spent the most time at a “training camp” in Brazil in the early 90s. Tafalla’s home was spartan, save for an enormous, grotesque mural on one wall of a skinless man sat like the buddha, with handless arms at his sides, and a ring of severed, skinless hands forming Mudras in a ring around him. The man was totally skinless with a serene-looking expression. Text at the bottom of the mural identified the man as Adolf Hitler, the leader of the Third Reich, as an “Ascended Master”. Behind him was a shining star, casting light on mounds of dismembered corpses heaped high behind him. VERA had the pleasure of seeing that mural first. It was only after she read the caption that she heard the chain rattling in the basement.

Against her better judgment, she descended the stairs to the cellar to investigate, and that’s where she found him. A man. Completely skinless, vibrating with pain, staring out from the back wall. In Brazilian Portuguese, he pleaded for her to kill him. A single shot to the head put him down, only for the voice to rise again.

“Try harder”.

SYNOD-2 briefly questioned the man, learning he was only a teenager from Manaus, Brazil, who had been captured by the Karotechia and sacrificed in a ritual, only to be resurrected as a slave at La Estancia and eventually given to Tafalla as a “servant”. Tafalla kept the resurrected horror in his basement in a constant state of pain. VICTOR reasoned that as a cultist of Der Fuhrer, Tafalla thought that keeping the teenager in a constant state of agony would “feed the Fuhrer” with the pain and suffering of the lesser races he demanded in the pages of Mein Triumph.

Satisfied with his answers, and unwilling to let his torment continue, VICTOR uttered the phrase to destroy those resurrected from Essential Salts and watched the boy crumble into iridescent ash. Then they lay in wait for Tafalla, to exact the same torments onto him.

Tafalla returned home with two other men in police uniforms. The men, drunk from their time at the Falcon’s Roost, only had enough time to produce the plate of cocaine and cut a line before VERMUNDO rounded the corner and introduced himself by firing a shot clean through one of the cop’s heads. A brief round of questioning later, the second policeman was killed, and Tafalla was taken to his own basement to be interrogated by VICTOR. The information gleaned from those agonizing hours confirmed their suspicions: The Colonia Dignidad was a Karotechia compound that housed a Gate in a secret cellar. Tafalla didn’t know where the Gate led, but knew that the Karotechia’s scheme when they knew the Carabineros were on their way, was to herd all their illegal equipment and personnel through the portal until the search was finished. Details on the Colonia’s personnel was also extracted, including that the resurrected SS-Standartenfuhrer Walter Rauff lived there with the former Karotechia researcher Dario Rohrbach. Tafalla did not survive his interrogation.

From Russia With Hate

That weekend, at another airstrip, SYNOD-2 welcomed their friends from SV-8. A cadre of about 20 Cuban mercenaries accompanied by 8 Spetsnaz operatives who had worked SV-8 assignments in the past. The whole outfit was led by a pair of SV-8 officers codenamed ALCHEMIST and PATRON. VICTOR had already encountered ALCHEMIST, and after exchanging a headshake and some auspicious words, ALCHEMIST, in his own private way, came to understand this.

On the way to their lodgings, SYNOD-2 laid out their battle plan to infiltrate La Colonia Dignidad while they were distracted by simultaneous attacks by both the MIR and the Carabineros de Chile. They would infiltrate by plane, sabotage the Gate housed in the secret cellar, and exfiltrate. Plain and simple.

For their part, SV-8 were only too excited to get started. They’d had their noses bloodied by the Karotechia before, now it was time to repay the favour.

(this AAR is being written many weeks after this very long scenario went down, so this is very much an abstract of what really went down)
