OPERATION SILVER SYNOD

TO: ALPHONSE. FROM: I-CELL, V-CELL

ENTRY THREE

// BEGIN MESSAGE //

// THE COLONY //

15AUG01

In the cessna, SYNOD-2 and their SV-8 allies check their weapons and get ready. VERMUNDO steers the plane towards the runway at La Colonia Dignidad. Even before they touch the runway, they know they're being shot at. Small arms fire whizzes past the plane, and above them, the first few bursts of a flak cannon firing off. Before the plane can screech to a halt on the tarmac, they can hear the report of gunfire near the Colony's perimeters. They exit the vehicle and make for a ditch. Silhouetted against the lights of the Colony, they can see a fireteam of about twelve armed men, most in shirts and shorts with some variety of soviet army webbing, their knives, and their Lee-Enfield rifles. A few have proper body armour and MP5s - Ritter, they know. They approach the tarmac flanking a half-track mounted with an anti-aircraft cannon.

Karotechia Half-Track

The battle is joined, and after a rattle of gunfire, it ends. SYNOD-2 sweeps past the half-track and check for survivors. SV-8's officers, and their cuban mercenaries, are diligent in assuring they leave no witnesses, and a few groaning colonists are silenced as they continue towards the Colony's centre.

The "Potato Cellar", a warehouse formerly used for the torture of Chilean political prisoners, is said to house the "Stone Gate" the Karotechia have used at the Colony. SYNOD-2's plan is to use plastic explosive to destroy the Gate, then proceed towards the villa where the colony's leaders, Dario Rohrbach and Walter Rauff, are surely hiding.

To confuse the Karotechia, and tie up their defenses while they make their infiltration by air - the Carabineros de Chile roll up to the main gate of the compound in armored trucks, come to serve a search warrant, while at the same time on the other side of the Colony. MIR guerillas open fire on the Colony. Confusion sets in, and before long, the Colony is stuck in a three-way battle between Marxist guerillas and the police. As gunfire chatters around them, SYNOD-2 snakes their way through the colony to the Cellar. As they progress, an announcement comes over the loudspeakers. "PROTOKOL JERICHO. PROTOKOL JERICHO." is all that's said, in a placid but cold voice. Colonists. Men, women, children, all begin to converge on the Villa. Whatever that means, they don't want to stick around to see it. The team bursts into the Cellar and sets up their C4 explosives.

Just as they leave the cellar, the lights around the Colony are cut, and the entire village is plunged into immediate, total darkness. Over the gunfire, the team hears something coming from the villa.

Screaming. Then something else. Something inhuman.

In their NVGs, SYNOD-2 just barely catches it. A snake. A winged serpent, oily and black and the size of a bus sailing through the night air like a falcon. The beasts crashes into the gate, and the screams of dozens of Chilean SWAT replace the chatter of gunfire. They make the call then: fuck the Villa, we're leaving. They narrowly escape the immense and lightless horror, perhaps only just saved by a desperate and bloody ritual cast in desperation by the SV-8 officers to guard the Cessna as it lifts into the night sky.

// THE SUBMARINE //

10SEPT01

In the small boat, VERMUNDO gives the go signal, and VICTOR, VERA, and the SV-8 Spetsnaz plunge into the cold, cold water and begin to swim towards the island. On either side of them, the enourmous, snow-topped mountains of Tierra del Fuego lift towards the sky like hands, cradling the water of the straits of Magellan.

VERMUNDO's sources confirmed the existence of a submarine bay on the private estate of Karlo Eichenwald, a Chilean financier and a confirmed member of the Exalted Circle. The plan is simple, to use a controlled explosives to destroy the pillars of the submarine bay and cause it - and the mansion above, where Eichenwald dines with his fellow Circle members and the Karotechia - to collapse.

The strike team swims through the frigid water towards their target, surrounded on all sides by an impenetrable dark. Through the full-face masks, VICTOR and VERA see them on the sea floor, scuttling around - the Children of the Black Water. Enourmous aquatic humanoids, each the size of a bear. VICTOR's mind goes back to the Wainwood Manor in the bayou, and the first time he ever saw one. He remembers it ripping Wainwood's Klansmen guards to ribbons with their claws, their gift of telekinesis that allowed them to fling their contact's muscle car through the second story of the manor. He's relieved to see them placid, uninterested. No, not uninterested: cowed.

Child of the Black Water

IRENA and IMOGEN of I-Cell, the experts of the Exalted Circle, warned against an aquatic infiltration. They warned that the private islands of the Circle's members are likely to be teeming with the "Aquatic Humanoids" as Delta Green so anodynely calls them - or the Children of the Black Water as SV-8 calls them. The question was then posed to "PATRON" and "ALCHEMIST", the two SV-8 officers accompanying them. In SV-8's prodigious occult library, does such a ritual exist that could be used to dissuade the Aquatic Humanoids from attacking the agents. It was a gamble, to be certain, but the request was put through, and before long, they returned to SYNOD-2 with XEROX'd pages from an anotated manuscript, translated into Russian from Koine Greek. The officers instructed VICTOR, VERA, and the Spetsnaz in the ritual, which involved a constant, repetitive chant that, while spoken, forbids the Aquatics from disturbing them.

They emerge from the water and climb the onto the dock of the submarine bay. The submarine sitting in the centre is diesel, an aged French flag emblazoned on one side with the name "Minerve". The Spetsnaz wasted no time and set about their work, sneaking through the Bay and planting explosive charges. Planting their second charge was interrupted after they were nearly discovered by Hurricane Group mercenaries - who were promptly and quietly eliminated before an alarm could be raised. As the fifth charge (out of six) was being set, a door above them opened, and onto the catwalks above the bay, two-dozen Karotechia Ritter poured through, but rather than attack the striketeam, they proceeded to the storeroom where VERMUNDO's sources indicated the Circle was conducting so-called "Operation WRECKINGBALL" using a newly constructed gate courtesy of the Karotechia. As the Karotechia Ritter entered, a hail of gunfire erupted - they were killing Exalted Circle personnel. All around them, echoing down the halls, the strike team could hear the unmistakable sounds of slaughter. The Karotechia had betrayed their allies - but why? A question for later. The strike team made for the final pillar when a team of Ritter entered the submarine bay, searching for stragglers. They were immediately fired upon, and eventually killed after a brief firefight. Once the charges were set and their timers activated, the team didn't waste any time to leave. Already, VICTOR could see the Ritter reanimating before his very eyes, surgically-implanted capsules of Reanimation Formula, he knew. The bloodthirsty, mindless horrors sprung after the strike team as they dove into the water. All breathlessly performing their chant to ward away the water's inhabitants.

In the motorboat, the strike team laid on their backs, for the first half-hour no one spoke. Many were on the verge of passing out. The chant didn't come without a steep cost, and each had been drained of their energy - their willpower. VERMUNDO proceeded to their rendezvous point with the rest of SYNOD-2.

// THE FISHING VILLAGE //

10SEPT01

While VICTOR, VERA, and the Russians infiltrated the private island, a second detachment stayed behind at Port Harris. Intelligence gathered prior to the raid indicated the Karotechia had setup a small listening post at Port Harris, and counterintelligence operatives from around Chile had been relocated to it in the weeks leading up to the 10th. The detachment consisted of Agent IRENA and WAXER, as well as some personnel from the conspiracy were retasked to take care of this, most notably Agent VERDANCE and OMAR, as well as Agent DARREN of D-Cell. (DARREN was originally considered for infiltrating the private island, but eventually was retasked with helping the Port Harris detachment with the Karotechia). Right as the boat team commenced their infiltration of the private island, the Port Harris team raided the Karotechia's listening post near the edge of town. The whole ordeal was resolved in under an hour with no casualties from Delta Green, and once important intelligence was collected, an effort was made to pack everything up and get off Port Harris before anyone noticed.

About an hour later, the Harris team were finishing packing up their boat back to Ushuaia, Argentina, where SYNOD-2 relocated after the Colonia raid, when they noticed some Chilean fishermen by the docks. Evidently, one had encountered a sinking vessel south of Port Harris and managed to rescue the man aboard. As IRENA drew closer, she got a better glimpse of the man as he hauld himself to his feet. Enourmously tall and muscular, but his skin was mottled and sickly and vascular in a way that betrayed disease. Salt water dripped down his bald scalp and his face. A face she recognized as it raised up to look at her.

Monty.

She immediately drew her pistol and shot him. The bullet striking him in the shoulder but somehow only bruising him. The fishermen drew back in shock as Monty stood and roared.

"WHY CAN'T YOU JUST LEAVE ME THE FUCK ALONE", as he did, IRENA noticed that behind him, the Fishermen had suddenly leapt onto one another, beating and blugeoning each other with their fists or whatever weapons were handy. She only had seconds to contemplate this before she felt something strike her in the temple and she saw stars. Before she could put together what was happening, she saw WAXER raining down fists onto her head in a blind rage.

A brief tussle, and IRENA was able to wrestle WAXER off her just as OMAR emerged from the cabin of their ship, gun drawn, to investigate the commotion. Scrabbling onto the wharf, IRENA chased MONTY, staggering his way inland, dragging a duffel bag behind him.

"I remember you, the bitch from Monument." He rasped. "You don't even realize the favour I just did you. All of you."

"I do, now I'm paying it back" she said, and she fired two shots. They should have struck his head and laid him flat, she's sure of it. But instead she say the bullets stop just short of him, a ripple passing over MONTY's form like heat shimmer.

"Stupid mistake" he muttered as he hauled out a TEC-9 machine pistol and fired a burst of shots that tore through IRENA's stomach. The pain seared through IRENA and she fell over, nearly passing out as WAXER and OMAR fired on MONTY as he retreated into the fishing village.

Agent DARREN and VERDANCE, who were resting for the night, planning to take a boat ride the next morning to Ushuaia, were awoken by the gunshots, followed shortly after by OMAR's call over the radio that MONTY was on-site, active, and that IRENA was injured. They jumped out of bed and burst out the door, checking their weapons as they ran.

At the docks, OMAR crouched over IRENA and uttered a short prayer. A familiar, but excruciating feeling passed over IRENA as the flesh of her stomach, rent by a hail of 9mm bullets, knit itself back together. An iteration of the ritual ISAAC used to resuscitate her back in Moscow-on-the-Chesapeake only a few years before. Sweating bullets and only barely fighting down the urge to vomit, IRENA climbed to her feet and readied her weapon just as VERDANCE and OMAR arrived. They clued them in, then hatched a plan of action: There was no way MONTY could be allowed to linger in Port Harris, and they'd have to act quick to kill him. Primarily because it was all too likely that the Karotechia would be soon their way. They fanned out and began a search, heading south through the town. It didn't take long before VERDANCE, who had climbed a nearby watertower, to spot MONTY breaking the door down into a nearby fishing supply store. The team closed in on the store and surrounded the exits.

The crew attempt to bait MONTY out of the store, however it was VERDANCE who noticed a single vehicle approaching the rear of the store, and two men stepping out, as well as several small "things" that seemed to scuttle across the ground.

Days before, an fruitless attempt was made in Argentina to trap MONTY while he, and some Exalted Circle retainers, were attempting to score him some heroin. Two policemen were called to investigate and they confronted MONTY, only for him to do "something" to them (what exactly, the agents didn't know. All they saw was the two officers exiting the apartment block MONTY had entered, their faces covered in MONTY's oily, black vomit, seemingly unaware and unbothered by it). It was noted by some of VERMUNDO's local contacts that those officers had stopped showing up for work a few days before this all went down. Guess we know where they are now.

As MONTY's enthralled officers began to take potshots at the agents, and IRENA and WAXER found themselves being harassed by what appeared to be impossibly animate severed human heads. Just then, MONTY burst out of the supply store, kicking down the fire escape before ripping it off its hinges to use as a shield against small arms fire. DARREN and OMAR closed in on him. DARREN going through the store, OMAR looping around the outside to catch him offguard. A few shots in the back by DARREN got MONTY's attention, and he rushed the Navy SEAL down to fight him one-on-one in the darkened store. A few impossibly strong punches knocked DARREN on his ass, and MONTY had clapped his hands over his head, and was just beginning to push his fingers in DARREN's eyes when OMAR intervened. Wielding his starmetal machete, OMAR (who, because of MONTY's heightened mutant stature, had to literally climb onto his back) took a swing and nearly cut MONTY's head clean off. Sniper fire from VERDANCE and some small arms fire was sufficient to destroy MONTY's enthralled officers and their hideous familiars, and they had just enough time to douse the corrupted agents body in gasoline and set it aflame when VERDANCE alerted them. There was a helicopter circling the island, and it wasn't Delta Green's. The Karotechia was almost definitely on its way, and unless they were up for a second round against Reinhard Galt and his Totenkopf Kommando, they needed to burn rubber. The agents snuck away, and once the helicopter and dropped off its fireteam and was en route back to Wickham Island, they boarded their ship and set off into the night, keeping a nervous eye to the sky.

// ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE //

11SEPT01

The next morning gave them a new complication, and new orders from the top.

In New York and Washington D.C., the deadliest terror attack in American history had unfolded. Jihadists connected to Al Qaeda rammed two boeing passenger airliners into the Twin Towers. The deaths were still being counted, but early projections were putting it in the thousands. The word coming down the line was that the FBI, CIA, and the Armed Forces were calling back hundreds of thousands of operatives from overseas operations. This was to include the entirety of the PATCON team, under whose auspices V-Cell and I-Cell were acting. (PATCON, by this point, was a task force under almost complete Delta Green control, and the top-secret nature of its work proved valuable in organizing operations against the Karotechia). Their activities were being cut short in South America, and they'd be heading back to the United States to be reorganized under different counter-terror task forces to combat America's newest enemy. This certainly meant their days of hunting the Karotechia were over.

OMAR came to VERDANCE and VICTOR, the two had been leading the charge against the Karotechia for years by this point, as well as their newer additions, VERA, VERMUNDO, WAXER, and gave them an offer. OMAR, and their allies in SV-8, knew people in South America, and this operation proved the use of local and SV-8 assets in fighting the Karotechia. The offer was this. To go AWOL. To forgeo their superior's orders and throw in SV-8 to continue the fight. They had intelligence now that confirmed the location of La Estancia, the Karotechia's headquarters in the Brazilian Rainforest.

If they went back to the states now and let themselves be retasked to new counter-terror operations overseas, it would almost certainly mean waiting years until their next opportunity to attack. By that point, the Karotechia would have time to recuperate, rearm, replenish lost numbers. They could even relocate their headquarters, and we'd be back at square one again. But if they struck now, there was a chance they could deal the killing blow to their operation, or, at minimum, put it out of commission long enough for A-Cell to organize a follow-up operation. WAXER and VERMUNDO rejected OMAR's offer, and chose to return stateside. VERA, VERDANCE, and VICTOR said yes, and so they packed their things and moved to the quarters were their allies in SV-8 were holed up to share their plan. VERMUNDO gave them the favour of flying them into the Brazilian state of Amazonias on their way home. It would be here that VERA, VERDANCE, and VICTOR, with their Russian allies, would plan the last attack.
